'True yoga doesn’t just change your body and improve your health, it changes who you are'

Yoga is for everyone with Caroline Carty.
With over 15 years experience of teaching yoga and many more practising, my driving force is to share the amazing gifts that yoga brings as widely as possible. Yoga is life-changing and should be accessible to everyone, you don’t need to be fit or flexible to derive great benefit from yoga.
True yoga doesn’t just change your body and improve your health, it changes who you are!
For me a good yoga class should create ease in both body and mind and that is what I strive to achieve for all of my students.
Yoga can also be a powerful therapeutic tool for those suffering from illness, injury or struggling with mental health issues. As a specialist teacher of yoga for chronic back pain, using the Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs programme, I have helped students avoid surgery, reduce or stop pain medication, feel empowered to take back control of their body and provided them with the tools to heal, strengthen and look after their back.
I express my deep gratitude to all the teachers and students who have made me the teacher and yogi I am.
As a former Divorce and Family lawyer, I have a deep empathy for anyone struggling with the slings and arrows of life and now as an experienced practitioner and teacher of yoga, I know with absolute certainty that yoga helps us navigate life’s challenges. To paraphrase John Lennon, ‘Yoga is the answer, I know that for sure!’
‘Yoga allows you to rediscover a sense of wholeness in your life, where you do not feel like you are constantly trying to fit the broken pieces together’
What I Teach
General Hatha Yoga and Breathwork
My general yoga classes are for all ages (over 18) and abilities. In my classes I have teenagers and octogenarians, triathletes and students with limited mobility. When planning a class my goal is always to design a session which will promote greater ease in body and mind. My classes are usually 90 minutes and always include breathwork (pranayama) and 15 minutes meditation/relaxation. I often have an anatomical focus to the sessions so might do a class on ‘waking up the gluts’ or ‘freeing the groins’. I also blend Somatics with my general yoga teaching as its approach aids reconnection between body and mind and somatic exercises create more ease, balance and freedom in the body.
Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs (YHLB)
Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs (YHLB) is a Social Enterprise which seeks to promote better back care throughout the UK. Founded by, Alison Trewhela, it is supported by Versus Arthritis, NHS England, Public Health England, and an ever-increasing number of GPs, Spinal Consultants, Physiotherapists and Pain Clinics. I was drawn to YHLB because of the robustness of its research – it is based on the largest ever randomised controlled trial of yoga in the UK and uniquely addresses the multi-faceted biopsychosocial nature of chronic low back pain.
The YHLB programme is a specialised, 12 week, small group, mind-body programme that offers long term empowering self-management to people with recurring/episodic/chronic low back pain. The course provides participants with a toolkit to improve their comfort, health and well-being themselves for the rest of their lives
YHLB transforms lives for those suffering with chronic back pain. It is a one-off course for long-term benefits, it gets people out of pain, back to work and back to doing the things they love!
Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs
Somatics is a movement therapy that reconnects mind and body. Somatic Movement Education offers a safe, fast and profound way to release and recalibrate tight muscles by re-training the nervous system and re-patterning the mind/body, such that every movement becomes easier and pain-free from your head to your toes.
Somatics restores functionality and balance in your muscular-skeletal system and relieves the effects of the stresses of the modern world. Put simply, Somatics restores the body/mind relationship and slowly educates you to notice how you feel in your body and make changes accordingly to improve your health and wellbeing.
Whilst somatics is beneficial for everyone, it is particularly helpful for those suffering from muscular-skeletal pain including all types of back pain, neck, shoulder, hip and knee pain. It can relieve the symptoms of many conditions including Arthritis, Sciatica, Scoliosis, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Frozen Shoulder, Piriformis Syndrome, Plantar Fasciitis, ME, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia. It is extremely helpful to athletes in the prevention of and recovery from injury. It can also relieve the symptoms of stress and anxiety related disorders.
I blend Somatics into my general yoga classes but also teach pure Somatics as a 12 week Introduction to Somatics Course.
Yoga for Resilience Workshops
From time to time I teach workshops on fostering resilience. These are usually half-day workshops which I run with a counselling psychologist colleague, Dr Carole Francis-Smith in which we provide the following:
- An understanding of why we might be vulnerable to anxiety, stress and depression using psycho-educational material (brain evolution, behavioural responses to stress, emotional regulation etc.)
- Input on how current online influences may be impacting on our mental health and self-critic.
- Well-researched yoga techniques that align with methods used by many therapists to support clients, and themselves.
- Experiential exercises as a taster of these techniques.
These workshops offer a unique opportunity to explore how we can better support ourselves in dealing with the stresses of modern life. Providing access to 2 experienced professionals, the workshops uniquely combine educational insight into our mental health with well-researched yoga techniques to empower us to better cope with the burdens placed upon us.
If you are a business or organisation, looking to support and reinforce your workforce’s well-being, please contact me to arrange a workshop. Dr Francis-Smith and I can tailor the workshop to your needs.
